Mash Potato Recipe

A Mash Potato Recipe as some call it, or a Mashed potatoes recipe as I call it, is one of my all time favorites! I love plain mashed potatos, garlic mash, cheddar mashed potatoes and about any kind you want to make. I love leftover mashed potatoes grilled up in the morning too! When it comes to mashed potatoes, they are a favorite comfort food to many people. I use 1 potato per person, so for 4 people, I’ll use four Idaho potatoes.

This recipe is for 4 people, so I’ll use 4 potatoes:

Mashed potatoes are very simple to make. You’ll want to wash and skin your potatoes. Once the potatoes are washed, you’ll want to cut them into chunks about the size of ice cubes. Too small and they’ll get mushy, while too big and those potatoes will take a longer time to cook through! Add your potatoes to a sauce pan or a small soup pan. I add water to just covering the potatoes. Once the water starts to boil, cook them for 15 to 20 minutes. They should be fork tender.

Drain the water, and using a hand masher, mash the potatoes. Once they get to a mostly mushed consistency, I pull out my electric blender. Slowly pour in about 1/4 cup of milk, 1/4 stick of butter, and blend together. This is where it gets personal, as some people like stiff potatoes, where others prefer a creamier potato consistency. Continue to add a little bit of extra milk if you like them creamier. Do this slowly, as if you over pour milk, they’ll get too mushy. I like to season my mashed potatoes with celery salt, garlic salt and black pepper. Obviously, you’ll season to your family’s taste, but this is how I was taught by my father from the time I was small. Another small tip: if you have kids who fuss over veggies, toss in some string beans with the mashed potatoes and they’ll barely notice the taste. I learned this from my children’s grandmother!

Delish! A simple mashed potatoes recipe makes for a great side dish. And whether you call them Mash Potatoes or Mashed Potatoes, that’s your business!
